Sandanski - BulgariaThe history of the beautiful town of Sandanski, liked by many Bulgarian tourists and foreign visitors goes through to the time of the glorious Thracian tribe, the Medi. Many years later many refugees from the region of South Thrace come to live here, bringing their way of life and culture and giving a new future to that piece of Bulgarian land.
Sandanski is located around the mineral springs in the foot of Pirin Mountain, mainly in the right shore of the river Sandanska Bistritsa. It is 65km from Blagoevgrad, 22km from Kulata and 166km from Sofia. The population is 27,000 people. They are very impulsive and know how to make fun. There are six mineral springs on the territory of Sandanski municipality. Excellent facilities are built that have made Sandanski a famous national and international balneology resort for healing. There are many football, volleyball, handball playgrounds and swimming pools for people of all ages. You will be fascinated by its unique Mediterranean climate, which is incredibly mild. Worth mentioning and maybe the most typical thing for Bulgaria is that the locals have almost never seen snow. Summer is hot and the winter average temperatures are above the 0 C. The town is proud of its unique park - on a territory of 344 000 sq metres, there are more than 200 species of Mediterranean plants. The park is wonderful park for recreation and entertainment - stadium, the summer theatre, and artificial lake with water cycles, boats and bar. The monastery of St. Cosma and damyan is located 2km north from the centre of Sandanski in a picturesque area among meadows orchards and greenness. Probably it was the place where the two brothers Cosma and damyan lived and cured sick people. To make your visit complete you must see the pretty resort Popina Laka, situated in Pirin Mountain and the 11m high Popina laka Waterfall. The Monastery of Rozhen - 30km northeast from Sandanski is one of the famous and honoured cultural and religious centres in Bulgaria. |
