Veliko Turnovo - Bulgaria

Veliko Turnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is located around the high ridges of the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, over the steep banks of Yantra river with picturesque houses clinging to the cliffs.

The fortress situated on Tsarevets hill is almost entirely encircled by the river. It was the seat of the Bulgarian tsar in the 12th century.

Veliko Turnovo rests on the foot of Stara Planina mountain 260km away form Sofia, on the E85 and E772 highways. The E85 connects the Romanian border (through Rousse) and the Turkish border of Bulgaria. The E772 highway goes from Sofia to Shoumen and carries out to Varna and Black Sea.

The curves which Yantra River makes in Turnovo plain shapes different peninsulas. The biggest one which is in the middle which was built a revival town which houses are situated like an amphitheatre. It is known as "Tsarevets".

The second peninsula is situated south of the first one "Sveta Gora". There were monasteries built here during the Middle Ages. This hill looks like a tetrahedral pyramid against the centre of the town and it finishes to the one of the most picturesque places in Turnovo "Asenovtsi"Park. Sveta Gora hill connects with other hills due to the bridge between two tunnels. On this hill there is one of the most popular and famous universities.

The third peninsula - Trapezitsa is on the north of the first one. It has shape of trapezium. It is encircled by rocks. From west, south and south-east the hills is surrounded by the Yantra River, on the north there is a small valley where passes the road for monastery "St. Troitsa".

Veliko Turnovo is town full of memories. It makes impression with its original and amazing location and effects with its specific Bulgarian architecture.

There are very interesting houses which keep their open verandas, small trim windows, original ceilings and cupboards.

One of the most picturesque streets in revival town with many restored houses is " Gurko Street". All houses are put up one next to another and all look at to the river. The place is unbelievable with its nice, unique and very attractive location.

In the town there are kept inns. The first one "Hadji Nikoli" faces to the street and forms the Bulgarian revival part of the town. It is situated on two streets, consists of two parallel buildings with small yard inside. The views inside the inn are unforgettable with valuable architecture.

"Stambolov Inn" is a three storey building. It is restored as Ethnographic museum.

The town is full of churches which date from national Bulgarian revival.

There is theatre, a stadium, a Sport Hall and many hotels.

Many Bulgarian and foreign tourists visit the historical places, to admire audio-video performance, to see the "Asenovtsi" monument, rich museums, Hill of Tsarevets and the Boldwyn tower.

The area around Turnovo is full of  monasteries, Kilifarevski, kapinovski, Preobrajenski. Veliko Turnovo is starting point to Arbanasi, town of Elena, Drianovo, Tryavna, Boshentsi.
